Frank Woolworth opened the first of his “five cent” stores on this date in 1878.
I remember our Woolworth’s store here (my home town). The building still exists, but has been turned into many little offices for many different things. It seems like ages ago, but even today, when I drive past it, I can still remember going there with my mom and grandma for a piece of pie during the afternoon. I’m the youngest girl, so I was the only one not in school at that time of day. We used to sit in the back at the cafe, by tinted windows, with a glass of water (I think) and pie. My mom still reminds me that when I was even younger, still in a highchair young, they used to take me there for lunch and one time, I was having a hissy fit and knocked my glass of pop all over the place.
Typical me. Such a drama queen, I was.
Woolworth has an important sliver amongst my memories. I even remember, clearly, what the inside of the building looked like. White tile floors. 2 huge escalators with wide steps in between (that we kids used to play around on). The sewing/material section was on the lower level, which we visited often. My mom is still a queen of the sewing machine.
Good memories. Reminds me again of my age and how fast times are changing.
